To the Movies!

Fangirling: Well, aside from Ratatouille and Harry Potter, I've thus far managed to catch all the movies I wanted to see this summer (POTC3, Transformers). Plus, I got to see The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe belatedly while at the beach the other week. So, the commentary, in the order that I saw them:
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - This one probably rates at the bottom of the list so far. It was good. But, it wasn't chatter-about-the-movie-all-the-way-home-and-stay-psyched-about-it-for-the-next-two-days good. There were a lot of little things that I liked. Jack was still Jack; crazy as ever. Norrington did finally get back in my good graces... Sadly, he has horrible timing. (And, what happened to all his swordfighting moves from the last movie? He went down so easily!) And, I honestly thought Jack was going to be the one to stab Jones' heart, so the final resolution there was interesting.
But, overall... Overall, I was a little disappointed. I was completely unable to follow Will and Elizabeth. Their motivations and goals came across as muddled, and I wasn't sure if even they knew why and for whom they were doing what they were doing. And, I'm also not at all sure that I or they ever figured it out either.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Excellent movie. Probably one of the best movie adaptations of a book I've seen in terms of sticking very closely to the source material. (And, yes, I did re-read to check because I'd completely forgotten a few things.) The parts that they did add in, particularly at the beginning, were helpful in introducing the characters, so they were completely welcome. And, I absolutely loved the beavers. Their light-hearted snarking at one another added some welcome fun to otherwise serious moments.
Transformers - Ladies and gentlemen, we have found the chatter-about-the-movie-all-the-way-home-and-stay-psyched-about-it-for-the-next-two-days movie! And, it made me want the Generation 1 boxset. Anyways, assorted comments:
- I loved Bumblebee. His way of "talking" through the radio was so good it was almost a shame that he regained his voice in the end.
- I loved that the movie used the Decepticons' transformations into military vehicles to great and almost scary effect with the number of times they were able to infiltrate the military forces and create confusion as to what was a normal, human-piloted craft and what was not.
- Various references to the original series = awesome.
- Peter Cullen back as the voice of Optimus = perfect.
- Charlie Adler as the voice of Starscream = Is that you, Charlie?
- I'm a little confused as to why all of the robots created by the Allspark during the movie seemed to be set on "Kill" mode. Presumably, it created all of the Transformers in ages past, so why were all the new robots (so far as we saw) mindless killing machines? Or did I miss something in the short flashback and we're to assume Megatron may have already tampered with the Allspark before it was cast into space? Well, if I missed something, that's fine because I'm definitely buying the movie when it comes out on DVD and watching it many more times.
- My single gripe would be that some of the jokes seemed to be a bit too... rude and/or tasteless I guess. Not to my taste anyways.
