kristensk: Thundercracker holding his dog Buster (TF - TC and Buster)
I will do a general update and Christmas wrap-up. But, first, I realized I'd never posted this oneshot here.

So, childhood favorite, Transformers (via the 1980's cartoon), dragged me back in with the "Transformers One" movie. Then, the fanfics sold me on the fanon version of these three as brothers. I'm a sucker for brothers even if their care for one another only exists (tenuously) in the comics. And, only between Thundercracker and Skywarp. Anyways...

They’d gotten careless. At first, they’d been keenly aware that Starscream was immortal, but Thundercracker and Skywarp weren’t. Then, the carelessness crept in. And, the cost of it might be more than any of them could pay. )

So, as has become my tradition, I try to read something a little spooky over Halloween. This year, I've been working through some of the Edgar Allan Poe short stories I somehow missed. But, since I've been on a Transformers kick, I was also reminded of this fanfic.

Lost in Transmission by Koi Lungfish
Series: Transformers (G1/1980's cartoon continuity)
Rating: K+/PG
Warnings: Nothing beyond a little creepiness.
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Soundwave loses radio contact with Starscream whilst he's on patrol over the ocean.
Comments: I love the way this story builds the tension as a mundane day suddenly gains a minor annoyance that slowly grows into something truly ominous. There are some hints on the author's profile that this story might have been intended to be longer, but the existing ending, open as it is, is perfect. This is the kind of story where I don't need all the answers. It's more fun to wonder what on Planet Earth could so unnerve the Decepticons. Another alien species? Something supernatural? I also enjoyed the little details that reflect the lore of the particular region where Starscream runs into trouble. Takes me right back to the 80's "Unsolved Mysteries".
kristensk: Gurren-Lagann (Gurren-Lagann)
So, while it's not one of the series I talk about - or have tried fanworks for - the 1980's "Transformers" is definitely a strong memory from my childhood. So, it's been a lot of fun to see all the stuff recently released as part of its 40th anniversary.

Like Studio Trigger's amazing music video that manages to reference something from almost everything Transformers released in the US or Japan. I'm not sure about the comics, but the live action movies are included. And, for those like me who never kept up with much of it, here's a meticulously made guide to who's who and from what in each shot.

Plus, the entire first season of the 80's cartoon has been made available as one mega-file officially posted to YouTube.

Oh, and there's also this collection of music from the original 1980's score.

And, while not official or necessarily for the anniversary, YouTuber 87render has done some fantastic and well-made fan animations (also laden with anime references) as well as things like this older short that makes me laugh.

Probably due to the recent explosive manga chapters, there's been a corresponding explosion of excellent Ao no/Blue Exorcist short fics lately.
