Fanfic Recs From Some Old Favorite Series
May. 29th, 2019 09:14 pmSo, I actually collected these and wrote commentary a while ago and just hadn't posted. So, here's my latest fanfic recs. I was on a nostalgia kick in my fanfic reading there for a bit.
Rules of the Firehouse by Mendeia
Series: The Real Ghostbusters
Rating: PG
Warnings: Very vague innuendo
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: As tacked up on the wall beside the large common bedroom door where it could be readily found and equally-readily updated with new additions - a list of rules to keep the guys in line. At least, in theory. When they remember. Sometimes. Kinda.
Comments: I've never seen the live action "Ghostbusters", but I was crazy about the cartoon as a kid. And, thanks to a co-worker lending my brother his copies of the DVD's, I've been able to re-watch some of it recently. This nicely slotted into that with perfect characterization and absolutely hilarious commentary.
Faustus by Moonphase
Series: Care Bears
Rating: PG
Warnings: Some brief creepy imagery
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Snippets of the rest of the summer Dawn, John and Christy spent with Dark Heart.
Comments: I didn't know I needed Care Bears crossed with Lovecraftian undertones and dashes of Greek mythology, but I did. Yes, this is darker than the end of the second "Care Bears" movie implied, but it's fascinating too. Examining how, even if a demon turns over a new leaf, that doesn't make him instantly good at all this human stuff... or instantly human.
It Slices, It Dices! by pantswarrior
Series: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (most any continuity)
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Location: Dreamwidth.org
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Sure, a katana is the most predictable ninja weapon ever - but despite his brothers' teasing, a young Leonardo is adamant that his chosen weapon is not "boring".
Comments: I just needed these guys being themselves, and this delivered. The punchline is exactly what one expects... and perfectly so.

Date: 2019-05-30 05:57 am (UTC)--I've never seen the live action "Ghostbusters"...--
Wow. I'm pretty sure the original Ghostbusters is one of those movies everyone should see in their life. While it isn't something I'd ever be actively fannish about, it is a very fond memory from my '80s childhood--a supernatural romp with the kind of actually funny comedy stars they just don't make anymore. (And while I can guess the popular opinion is to the contrary, the sequel isn't bad either; it's just nowhere near as iconic.)
Also, nice music choice. *g*

Date: 2019-05-30 01:08 pm (UTC)That was definitely your rec. I'd been wandering through older fanfic links I had saved.
-- I'm pretty sure the original Ghostbusters is one of those movies everyone should see in their life.--
Huh. I'd actually never given it much thought. At the time it came out, I was six or so and definitely too young to see it. I would't have been allowed, and it genuinely would have scared me. A couple years later, one episode of the cartoon even did... Though I kept watching it. Anyway, I guess by the time I was old enough to see "Ghostbusters", I was into TMNT and it simply never occurred.

Date: 2019-05-30 07:34 pm (UTC)(ETA: So I only just learned that Netflix is doing a prequel series for The Dark Crystal. After watching the trailer... I'm both intrigued by it, and terrified of the possibility of another wonderful thing being ruined. o_O )

Date: 2019-05-31 01:22 pm (UTC)*laughs* I remember several childhood movies that way. One favorite my brother and I literally wore bad spots into was the tape with the B.C. newspaper comic Christmas special, The Secret of NIMH and The Last Unicorn. Oddly, I don't remember a copy of Ghostbusters even among my father's tapes... which could explain why I never saw it. If Dad wasn't interested or somehow missed it... well, he was the one who read the listings and recorded most of our movies. (Though he'd have taped it if we asked, of course.)

Huh! Now I'm joining you in tentative intrigue and concern.

Date: 2019-05-31 08:42 pm (UTC)And there was a hilarious comment on the series trailer on Youtube. It was to the effect of, "My childhood nightmares have returned! ...Yes, that's a good thing."
(Is it weird that movie monsters and fairytale witches never scared me as a kid? What terrified me was movies about bad things that could happen in real life. The Poseidon Adventure and Twister were my nightmare fodder. :Þ )

Date: 2019-06-03 08:41 pm (UTC)*laughs!* And, while the trailer looks interesting and the use of puppetry intrigues me, I have to confess to being worried by that fact that... Well, it seems likely that any characters introduced will not be surviving based on the existing movie.
--Is it weird that movie monsters and fairytale witches never scared me as a kid?--
No, I'd say that makes you quite a bit more sensible than me. I distinctly remember thinking back and wondering why what had scared me the most were the things that would never happen.
