Finds and Ficlets

Fangirling: I made an awesome, awesome find last week - a translation of the original "Twelve Kingdoms" novels! I'm sure I've mentioned the anime, the first box set of which I got for Christmas, and its book-like quality. I had suspected it was based on a book when I first saw it, but I never held out much hope for finding a copy of it in English. But, now I have, so... *much jumping for joy and squealing ensues*. And, it is, in fact, a series of books. The translation only seems to be up to book 2, which I'm now reading, but perhaps they will continue to the other books in time.
[Edit 2024] The first four books were officially released in English from Tokyopop but never the last two, and all of the books are now sadly out of print.
In other news, vaguely related by the fact that it was where I first saw "The Twelve Kingdoms" anime,
seekersks is talking Otakon again already. August seems like ages away, but it would be nice to have things all set early. And, to get a hotel a bit closer to the convention center.
Fanfiction: And, recently, a little fanfic idea I'd been toying with has come back with a vengeance. I think I once before posted a snippet from my SWAT Kat idea "The System is Breaking Down".
When you stepped into the Enforcer Commander’s shoes, you learned a lot of things. You learned that the mega-fauna were the result of injudicious nuclear testing. You learned where MASA kept the frozen aliens. You learned the contingency plan should the aliens happen to thaw. And, when Ulysses Feral came into the position, he learned that there were plans to create cloned Enforcers.
They were tentative at best, but the plans had been the pet project of the previous Enforcer Commander. If his notes were any indication, he envisioned an entire force cloned from the very best officers in each division.
Feral envisioned the entire project in a paper shredder and even went so far as to acquire one to make his vision a reality.
The solution worked nicely for the first five years of his command.
Then, the so-called "super-villains" came. It began with crime sprees and quickly escalated into lunatics with delusions of ruling the city as a private empire. The first wave put a strain on the Enforcers' resources, but they were, in the grand scheme of things, small fry.
It was around that point that Feral began to push to get the city water supply tested more stringently. His request was denied due to the expense.
Two months later, Dark Kat arrived. With Dark Kat's appearance and the resulting series of attacks, the mortality rate among Enforcers skyrocketed even as enrollment in the Enforcer Academy plummeted. Commander Feral was at a loss.
And then, the city government brought up the cloning issue.
