So, this weird little drabble is all
mintysage's fault.
Monster Movie Madness
“Is this revenge for something I did?” Chance asked, sliding lower in his theater seat.
“No.” Jake swallowed a mouthful of popcorn. “Why?”
“Because the main critter of your giant monster movie is doing gymnastics!” Chance barely kept his voice at a whisper as he jabbed a finger at the screen.
“He's gathering speed to attack,” Jake assured him.
“He could've done that by runnin'!”
“It wouldn't look as exciting.”
Chance shot him an incredulous look. “This is exciting?! It just turned into the Giant Monster Olympics!” He turned back to the screen where the monster was still spinning like a gymnast on the parallel bars. “And, how long does this go on?”
“Shh! He's making his move now,” Jake pointed out as the monster finally dove for his opponent.
Both kats focused on the movie. And, stared as its titular monster sat on the other creature and began to jump up and down on him.
Hand to his face, Chance wordlessly gestured at the screen.
“Well,” said Jake, “If you take it as a comedy, it’s still funnier than ‘Scaredy Kat’.”
Chance gave him a dirty look before scrunching deeper in his seat. “This is definitely revenge for something.”

Yes, this is all a reference to the Japanese monster (kaiju) movie "Gamera vs. Guiron". Behold actual imagery. (Of course, if this starts, Chance is going to run away screaming. Seriously, if the maracas come out, Chance is done.)
So, yes, this is a crazy in-joke that somehow took on a life of its own after Sage and I watched some really hilarious monster movie reviews. And then, I took a fatal step and watched an actual Gamera movie, 2006's "Gamera the Brave". ...It's actually a really, good, sweet movie. There's no silliness like the older entries, and the special effects are done well. And, I'm a sucker for the "A Boy and his X" storyline. If that's not your thing, there are three other newer Gamera movies made in the 90's that are also well worth watching. I've made my way through the first two, "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" and "Gamera 2: Advent of Legion". The second in particular is a fun, sci-fi monster movie. So... yeah, I might own a few Gamera movies now.
Look, you already knew I was weird!

Date: 2016-09-22 07:14 am (UTC)They sporked that particular Gamera movie on MST3k, you know. ;D As well as the original B&W one from 1965. The "boy and his monster" theme seems to have been recurrent with Gamera from the beginning.

Oh, yes ;) Whenever he felt a Gamera movie had reached a new level of silly or weird, the Youtube reviewer I watched would play the MST3k clip of Gamera doing gymnastics with the, "You know, I keep forgetting how weird this movie is," line on top of it. And, it never stopped being funny.
