Otakon 2012 - Overview

And, I'm finally getting around to my big post-Otakon post. This will have been the eighth year
seekersks and I have attended. We've toyed with the idea of trying something else - another convention or just some other event entirely - but Otakon almost always delivers a great weekend.
The Con: No lines this year! I mean, there were lines, but Seek and I managed to miss them all. Thursday badge pick-up set the tone for the rest of the con. We only got up early on Saturday and that because we wanted to attend an early-ish panel.
The Panels: My favorite panel this year was a toss-up between Peter S. Beagle's "The Visual Last Unicorn" and voice actor Tetsuya Kakihara's question and answer session. Peter S. Beagle always tells fascinating stories of his experiences, and I learned that there's a chance of seeing a full US release of the "Last Unicorn" soundtrack in the future. (I own the German release that lacks the full score.)
The Anime: For once, we actually watched more anime at the con than back at the hotel. This year's big showing was the fifth Gundam Unicorn OVA. And, it looked quite nice indeed on the big screen. We also caught The Secret World of Arriety, the first two episodes of Space Brothers, and the first four episodes of Martian Successor Nadesico. And now, I need to catch the rest of the latter two. (What? No, I don't know anything about having developed a fondness for anime focused around brothers.) Back at the hotel, Seek and I made it through the first six episodes of Tiger & Bunny. For the record,
mintysage, it's pretty good. The "Tiger" of the title, Kotetsu, is a lovable goofball of a superhero who was told as a child to use his super-powers to help people and took it very much to heart... even if his efforts tend to come off a bit clumsy. Remind you of anyone? ;) All in all, I saw a lot of great stuff.
The Random Photos:
Not exactly a con photo, but this was parked out back of the hotel as we were leaving.
Sadly, the food court Seek and I have frequented for years in Harborplace had vanished this year. Instead, that area is now a Ripley's Believe It or Not! Well, at least it has a cool entrance.
We took a semi-accidental detour on the way home that led us down a winding mountain road. But, the scenery was gorgeous.
The Stuff: *hangs head* I saw the third and final FMA artbook from Arakawa. But then, it disappeared while I debated over the price. So, most of this year's con money will be spent shopping online. However, I did get a nifty AnE T-shirt!
