It's been a while since I posted any fanfic recommendations. But, I've read several really good ones recently and... not-so-recently that deserve a post.
Believe by BrittMarie
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Rating: K+
Warnings: None
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: She'd always thought the local madman was interesting. And, so were his stories. Animeverse, pre-COS.
Comments: For some reason, the two years between the end of the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime and the movie intrigue me. Maybe because it's so obvious that a lot of things happened, many of which are left up to the viewer's imagination. The biggest for me is how both Ed and Mustang slid from confidently moving forward and healing to directionless depression. This story doesn't answer either question, but it does present an interesting snapshot of Ed at one of his lower points. And, it's nice to think that, even then, lost and considered a madman, he might find someone who will believe him.
From Ashes by Jordanna Morgan
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Rating: K+
Warnings: Post human transmutation unpleasantness
Location: Fanfiction.net or her site Brotherly Love
Status: Complete/10 chapters
Summary: Edward and Alphonse had a long journey to make before they ever left home. Animeverse.
Comments: I've read a few other stories that explored Ed and Al's recovery period after the failed transmutation, but I think this is the best. Oh, the others were good, but this is the one that made me cry. In a good way, Jordanna, honest. Other versions went into more depth about Ed's automail or how Al adjusted to his new body, and I enjoy all of that. But, "From Ashes" focuses on the heart of "Fullmetal Alchemist" - Ed and Al and the bond between them.
A Brother's Burden by Bookwrm389
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Rating: T
Warnings: Some violence and profanity
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/9 chapters plus outtakes
Summary: "A brother's burden is never easy, yet it's the one I refuse to remove from my shoulders." When Al is kidnapped by the homunculi and replaced by an imposter, will he find a way to return to his brother's side? Animeverse.
Comments: Another fanfic that beautifully emphasizes Ed and Al's brotherly relationship. Though, this time, from the angle of a more adventure-oriented story. Set in a sort of negative continuity, it's almost impossible to place the story within the anime timeline, but, once I started reading, that quickly stopped being important. The homunculi's trick is as unique as it is cruel, but it ultimately leads to one of my favorite Ed and Al moments ever.
Checkmate by The Curse of Forever
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Rating: T
Warnings: Profanity
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Just a "friendly" game of chess. Any continuity.
Comments: It's hard to say much about this one as it's just a short humor fic. But, it got a good laugh out of me. Especially Ed's rather "inventive" re-naming of the chess pieces.
Epsilon Run by Sister Coyote
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Rating: T
Warnings: Some violence and profanity
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Colonel Mustang's team was set to enjoy some much-anticipated leave. And then, the Elric brothers ran into something nasty on Epsilon Five. Alternate Universe.
Comments: As some of my past fanfic recs have made obvious, I absolutely love sci-fi AU's. Especially when they entail taking series that are either very-not-sci-fi or very-much-in-the-past and reworking them into a futuristic, high tech world. At least, I love them when they're done right. And, this one does it right. It mirrors the canon in so many little details, but, at the same time, adds unique elements and twists. It dearly makes me wish there were more than just this stand-alone adventure, but what there is is a lot of fun.
And, of course, there is no reason Fullmetal Alchemist needs to be sci-fi. I do love it as it is, and I love its setting. But, that someone could make it sci-fi and make it work? I'm impressed. And, I do just love Star Wars style space opera settings.
Project Tatterdemalion by Vathara
Series: Bleach
Rating: M/R
Warnings: Considerable violence and some profanity
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/3 Parts
Summary: What if Hollows were caused by an alien virus?
Comments: I meant to recommend this one ages ago. Because... well, see above about me and the sci-fi AU's. And, no one does them like Vathara. It was amazing enough when she took Rurouni Kenshin and re-wrote it in a sci-fi setting. But, now Bleach too?! And, it all fits so very perfectly! This is a fascinating, action-packed "what if?" that made for a great read. And, there's an equally good sequel, Project Asclepius. With any luck, there will be more in the future because there are still so many places this alternate universe could go.
And, now I look forward to reading the final installment of
metisket's crazy!Ed storyline, which will hopefully appear in a future recommendation. It's as tragic as it is hilarious, and I know it can't end all roses, but I do hope Ed will be able to find some peace... and, you know, survive. That would be nice.
