Otakon 2010 - The Long Ramble

Yes, I'm now back from Otakon and posting about it sooner than a week later for once! And, as I rambled a lot, see behind the cut.
The Trip: The trip up on Wednesday was great. After a few years to practice, we've finally found a nice route that completely avoids Washington, DC and its associated traffic. It takes us a little out of way and onto smaller roads, but it's a lovely drive up through the Shenandoah Valley. This year, we stopped on the way up for some photos of the Shenandoah River near Harper's Ferry, WV. Unfortunately, we forgot exactly where the actual stairs down to the river were, so
seekersks and I followed some swimmers/sunbathers and took this fun "path" instead. Mom declined to join us. (On the climb, I mean. She came along on the trip.)
The Con: As usual, Seeker and I mostly attended the voice actor question and answer sessions. Conveniently, almost all of them were in the same room. Also conveniently, they were in the Hilton's conference rooms, so, when the entire convention center was evacuated on Saturday due to a fire alarm (a false alarm, it turned out), we were able to stay.
All told, we attended Q and A sessions for Patrick Seitz, Todd Haberkorn, Michael Sinterniklaas, Stephanie Sheh and Vic Mignogna. Todd Haberkorn was hilarious with his constant joking and references to his pseudo-rivalry with Vic Mignogna, including calling Vic's cellphone during the panel just to tease him. Vic's panel was cut a little short, but still fun. And, we got to see another of his fan videos. This one being "The Fullmetal and Flame Show" featuring him and Travis Willingham speaking for action figure versions of Ed and Colonel Mustang. Yes, it was silly, but... also hilarious. It was basically a series of Looney Tunes style shorts wherein Edtorments tricks Mustang again and again. And, Michael Sinterniklaas' panel was just a little bizarre when he, through a fascinating series of topic jumps, told a story about joining a friend on a documentary project featuring the USS North Carolina. Oh, the story was interesting, but... being from North Carolina and having visited the battleship as a child, I never imagined I'd be at an anime convention in Baltimore hearing about it.
The Anime: We didn't watch any anime actually at the convention this year. They were showing Ponyo in the theater, and I really wanted to see it, but it conflicted with Todd Haberkorn's question and answer session. And, as I can rent the movie at home, I chose Todd's panel. However, back at the hotel, Seeker and I continued our ongoing marathon of Katekyoushi Hitman Reborn!. It's one of Seeker's current favorites and, now that we've gotten past the initial comedy episodes and into the more serious plotlines, I can see why. Not that the comedy wasn't fun - because the show has a great, wacky sense of humor - but... we just hit the time-travelling, and I love that kind of plot.
The Random Quotes:
"VOICE LASER ATTAAAAAACK!!!!" - From the "Craziest Mecha Moments" Panel
"Girlfriend has been invoked. This stuff is real now." - From the "Craziest Mecha Moments" Panel
"Why of course I'll sign your Death Note! ...What? You don't want me to put Vic's name?" - Todd Haberkorn
The Stuff: I searched up and down every aisle of the dealer room without success again this year. What gives, Dealer Room? I just wanted an FMA T-shirt! Okay, and this. No, I am not too old for toys. Not cool ones anyway. And, fortunately, there is Amazon ;)
