More Kaiju Fun From Legendary

I'm going to blather about "Godzilla vs. Kong" now. There will be spoilers.
I wasn't as excited for "Godzilla vs. Kong" as I was a couple years ago for "King of the Monsters". The stakes seemed smaller and the conflict forced. Also, I've never been a big King Kong fan, and I didn't see how he could remotely compete with the awesomely over-powered Godzilla. But, "Skull Island" was good, and "vs. Kong" delivered some solid monster battles. It doesn't upend "KOTM" for me, but it was fun, and I found myself surprisingly engaged with Kong's story arc. Granted, he found a really cool, "magic" ancestral bladed weapon, and I am all about that. Also, the nods to the older movie were great... as was Legendary conceding to the inevitability of all Godzilla continuities and sliding from the world-we-know to a world of wacky, sci-fi fun.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the final reveal of the Hollow Earth and at last having villains who existed purely to set events in motion without the writers trying to dredge up sympathy for their callous, city-wrecking plans. No, the human villains were only there to pave the way for Ghidorah's return. And, while I wanted a full-on Mecha King Ghidorah again, this take on the concept wasn't bad. ...And, there's still that skull lurking in the ruins of Apex' facility.
My only major disappointment was that the movie saw fit to bring "Gary" back and then do nothing with him while effectively transforming his daughter, Maddie, into a new and less interesting character. Honestly, both should have been left out of the movie. Which would then have opened up some time for my one other, small issue - what, if any, was the connection between the Mecha Ghidorzilla pilot named Serizawa and Dr. Serizawa? I feel something was cut there.
Still, a fun movie. Not my favorite, but I'll happily re-watch.
