kristensk: reading (fma bookworm)
[personal profile] kristensk
As usual, I'm constantly reading fanfiction. So, here are some reviews on a few of my favorite recent(ish) completed stories.

Brotherhood by Almiloveskiro
Series: Ao no/Blue Exorcist
Rating: K+/PG
Warnings: Violence, mentions of serious injuries, profanity.
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: During the final battle with the Illuminati, Yukio needs saving and finally learns that's all Rin wanted to do. Speculative future/wishful thinking. Mangaverse.
Comments: Until I read this, I don't think I'd realized how much I was missing my old shounen tropes. Because I needed this. An epic battle filled with raging super-powers, brotherliness, Rin fighting against all odds and winning, Rin being absolutely awesome. Seriously, I need more of this!

Change of Fate by Vathara
Series: Sword Art Online/Star Wars fusion
Rating: K+/PG
Warnings: Some violence.
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/10 Chapters
Summary: On the planet of Corellia, Kayaba released Old Republic Online... just before the Clone Wars...
Comments: Confession time - once Aincrad with its fantasy setting and real consequences ended, I never could quite get into SAO again. I liked the main cast well enough - especially Kirito, Asuna, and Klein. But, the virtual reality gimmick alone doesn't do it for me, and the harem shenanigans are actively off-putting. It's no surprise then that my favorite SAO fanfics take the Aincrad cast, allow them to keep the abilities they gained, and send them off an adventure far more interesting than game quests. And, of those fanfics, this is my favorite. Hands down.

The handling of the large ensemble cast is superb. Kirito and Asuna are at their best. Characters like Klein and Agil that canon has repeatedly shafted are given welcome moments to shine. The girls become real characters again instead of stock types to fill out the harem. (Said harem is limited to only Silica and Lisbeth pining for the very taken Kirito and brilliantly addressed by the comment from Kirito's mother that, "We'll have to find some nice boys for the others.") Silica (and Pina!) get special attention, and it's great to see Vathara showing her build on the courage she learned from Kirito. Then, there's Yulier and Thinker and a host of other minor characters both canon and originals brought in to flesh out the Star Wars side of things. All given life in even their small roles. Plus some much-enjoyed appearances from minor canon Star Wars characters like Rostek Horn and Bail Organa.

All that plus good old Star Wars fun - Force powers, Jedi, Sith, killer droids. And, best of all, Kirito dual-wielding lightsabers ;)

21st Century Superhero Phone Problems by Xnasha Minstrel
Series: Avengers (MCU)/Noragami
Rating: K+/PG
Warnings: Profanity.
Location: Fanfiction.net
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: SHIELD should really have taught Steve how to properly lock his phone screen. One mistaken phone call in the middle of battle ends up with a Delivery God and his Regalia in the fray. Fortunately, they were just what the doctor ordered.
Comments: This is the beautiful thing about Noragami. One phonecall, and you can drag Yato and Yukine all sorts of places. And, the characterizations and reactions with this mash-up are just perfect. From Yato's unflappable "business as usual" attitude to the Avengers' bafflement to the serious moment as two gods confer. And then, of course, there's the matter of Yato's payment. Fun times all around.
