Drabble Post - Outdated (AnE)

This is one of my "leftover" drabbles. I started it in the big flood of drabbles and shorts I did for Christmas exchanges last year. But, it wouldn't come together then, so it got put on the backburner. Anyway, ever wondered why most of the demon kings in AnE look a bit behind the times? Set in a probably distant future.



Outdated

Rin had always thought demons had no fashion sense. Like Mephisto in all his pink and purple, polka-dotted glory. But, even the demons who weren’t obviously colorblind were almost always a few decades – or worse, centuries - out of date.

So, when he heard people whispering about his clothes, it was a shock.

“....See that guy...”

“Looks like he just stepped out of 2020.”

Confused, Rin looked down at himself. Regular T-shirt. Regular pants. The shirt was faded and his pants' knees were worn, but that was normal enough. He looked the same as always. Then, he started comparing himself to the people around him and realized that was exactly the problem.

He had stopped aging sometime in his twenties, frozen forever at the age he reached physical and mental maturity. And, apparently, his tastes had frozen with him.

Huh. That explained a lot.

Well, at least he wasn’t colorblind.

*snorks* This reminds me of Ed's attitude in my modern-day epilogue to "Blood Brothers". Too busy hunting vampires to keep up with the times...

(On the other hand, I did see Ed going a completely different way in "Ironmongers and Alchemists", and fully embracing goth style--though really, that's just because it sort of came back around to the look he originally favored in Amestris. *g*)

*laughs at the latter* Yeah, fortunately for Ed (and probably Rin too), his favored look isn't so outdated (or bizarre) it isn't likely to come back in style. But, Mephisto is probably out of luck.

And, yeah, I can also see Ed going either way about his clothes. He does have a unique style, but it's also canon that he gets completely absorbed in his work. (You just know he probably skimps on the laundry sometimes and cleans his clothes with alchemy. And then, Al washes his things while he sleeps to make sure it's done right.)

...Now that you mention it, I think that one demands to be a drabble. No promises on when (look at how this one refused to play nice), but I shall give it a go.

*laughs* I was actually going to edit my comment, and belatedly suggest that it might fit in with the "Rules" series. (Given your suggestion of Al having a corollary of his own to Ed's ideas about laundry...)

I've actually got a little smidgen of dialogue in mind for it that doesn't really fit the "Rules" style. But, that just means it will probably be longer than a "Rules" drabble ;)
