Back to Ao no/Blue Exorcist Rambling

I haven't gabbled about Ao no/Blue Exorcist recently, so I'm going to do it now.

Starting with this awesome Rin and Yukio wallpaper [personal profile] jordannamorgan made for me as a gift. The text is lyrics from the song "Fighters" by Ravenface, which is oddly fighting for the twins.

And, now for some manga gabble.

So, I've been greatly enjoying the flashback arc even though it leaves me torn. Because Kato has made me love her version of Yuri Egin even more. She's brave and compassionate and idealistic without being naive. She tried her hardest to teach the newly formed Rinka/Satan empathy and believed in what he could have been. (A hope that may have been transferred to Rin given he shares part of the name she first gave Satan.) But, it's clear Yuri has no delusions about the reality of what Satan's become. Of course, because of all that, it hurts to know her fate is already sealed. ...Unless there's some last minute twist. Which would be awesome. Of course, even if she survived in a coma or a Mephisto-induced frozen pocket of time, Yuri's already gone through quite enough between trading herself to Satan for the sake of his hostages and the absolutely horrific conditions of the twins' birth.

Then, there's Satan. I'm still not sure what to make of the revelation that he - as a conscious, thinking being - is only a few years older than Rin and Yukio. He's no ancient evil, just an absurdly powerful manifestation with a genius intellect and the emotional maturity of a child. A deeply sociopathic child. On the one hand, learning that he's basically an overpowered brat lessens his menace. On the other, he's still an entertaining brat, and he is menacing in all the ways Lucifer has failed to be. Plus, it's obvious he's got a plan. One that I fear may be deeper than the obvious that he fathered the twins purely to create a body strong enough to sustain himself.

And, Rin. Oh, Rin. I want to hug him after the Trauma Conga Line he's been through on this little jaunt to the past. His breakdown in Chapter 109 was heartbreaking. But, there has to be some hope spot to what he's just seen. Because there is no way even the gentler Shiro of the first chapters would have tried to raise the hellbeast newborn!Rin appears to be. In fact, newborn!hellbeast!Rin is a validation of everyone's fears about him throughout the series. So, maybe he's actually possessed by Satan in the scenes we saw, maybe Yuri knows some trick to calm her baby down, maybe his human soul will assert itself on its own. There's got to be something! ...And, again, I feel like Yuri gave Rin his name for a reason. Your mother believed in you, Rin! And, she was right. You just need to realize that you do deserve to live and you were worth saving.

Guh, these twins and their self-esteem issues.

Oh, and I really, really need to know how on earth Shiro ever kept the twins' survival a secret given I think half the exorcists in the world were present for the birth.
