kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
*flop* And, my yearly Christmas image is done. It's a fairly simple one, so I have no idea why finishing it was like pulling teeth.

Now, on to [community profile] fandom_stocking!

Otherwise, it's been a great Christmas. I got to see the family, visited some friends, started my littlest cousin on model horse collecting (mwahaha), and even got an extra day off work. Gift-wise, I'm absolutely rolling in movies to re-watch now that I either finally own them or finally own them on DVD: Guardians of the Galaxy, Miracle of the White Stallions, Newsies, the 90's TMNT movies, Anastasia, and the anime Baccano!. Plus some manga, fuzzy socks, fuzzy shirts, and an adorable children's book I requested for... research purposes... yeah, interest in illustration and all that, you know. (Plus, I'm amused that the main character is named Yukio.)
kristensk: smirk (ane rin smirk)
So, after poking at it for ages on the tablet, I've finally finished this very simple fanart of Rin as a full-fledged exorcist.
kristensk: Inuyasha's tweakable ears (tweak)
Well, Christmas has come and gone, and it was a good time with the family. Different with one less this year, but we made the best of it. We spent a lot of time together picking up last minute presents, checking out the Christmas lights, and, for me, Mom, and Seeker, watching "Star Wars". Oh, and many cookies were made. Many, many. Plus amassing my yearly peppermint stash. And, that photo doesn't include the peppermint ice cream. Yes, yes, I am addicted.

Gift-wise, I've been started on two more manga, Blood Blockade Battlefront and My Hero Academia (shelf-space, I need it); finally got my hands on the "Pacific Rim" novelization, which will have to tide me over until the delayed sequel comes along; cashews (oh, it's been so long since I've had cashews), and [personal profile] jordannamorgan sent along peppermint for my stash, a wondermous Ao no/Blue Exorcist T-shirt plus an absolutely gorgeous little Fullmetal Alchemist-themed notebook/journal.

With all that went on, I didn't have time for my yearly Christmas pic, so, instead, I spruced up last year's (something I'd wanted to do anyway) and made a wallpaper version. (I'm linking to my DeviantART account as the file size is slightly huge, but I think it can be easily shrunk for smaller monitors.)

Now, it's off to see if I can at least finish a few things for [community profile] fandom_stocking this year.
kristensk: smile (kris ears)
And, squeaking in with a completely random Halloween SWAT Kat image. I doodled these two up a few weeks ago and decided to color them on a whim.

Also, I have a fanfic recommendation. I'm not really a big Halloween fan, but I do like a little bit of creepy. (I blame childhood exposure to "The Real Ghostbusters" and my grandfather's collection of sea-based ghost stories.) And, this fic hit the spot beautifully.

The Kraken by SectoBoss
Series: Stand Still Stay Silent
Rating: K+/PG
Warnings: Some violence, creepiness.
Location: Archive of Our Own
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: On the journey from Iceland to Denmark, Reynir's crewmates tell him the tale of one beast every sailor prays to never have to face.
Comments: I got into the Stand Still Stay Silent webcomic a while back. It's the ultimate exception that breaks my personal no zombies rule. Because the storyline is definitely a variant of the zombie apocalypse. Set 90 years after the mysterious Rash Illness decimated all mammalian life on land and sea, the nations of Scandinavia are, so far as they know, the only survivors. Everything else - including large swathes of their own former countries - is now the so-called Silent World, crumbling ruins filled with monsters. Because, with the Rash, death is the kinder fate.

"If you come across a Beast, a Troll, or a Giant, do not run or call for help, but stand still and stay silent. It might go away."

And, into this world, this fanfic brings the suggestion of an even more terrifying danger. One the story builds slowly through an old seaman's tale, sightings and clues gradually gathering into a nightmarish conclusion.
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
Whew! Sorry for the long silence. Life got a little crazy there for a bit between work and the holidays and, oh yeah, buying a car on one of my busiest work weeks because the seller was ready and the price was right. And, because I've been driving the same car for twenty years. Since it was five and I was sixteen.

At any rate, there was a brief family crisis, but, on the whole, the holidays were good. I got to see the extended family, and my immediate family got to spend quite a bit of time together. And, even though I was too ambitious and it was late, I did manage to finish my annual SWAT Kat Christmas pic. I also completed three entries for the [ profile] fmagiftexchange, which I'll be posting later.

Giftwise, I received a load of squee from [personal profile] jordannamorgan featuring FMA, AnE and Inuyasha goodies. Then, there were books, movies (ah, Les Miz, I've been wanting a re-watch), the final DVD set of the "Kekkaishi" anime and enough manga to bring me thiiiis close to completing my Inuyasha and Psyren sets.

Now, I just have a couple things to wrap up for [community profile] fandom_stocking...
kristensk: bingo! (sk bingo)
It's not very impressive, but I wanted to do something with a fall theme and combined that urge with a new title graphic for my SWAT Kat page. You can view the full size image here. Part of the leaves are the default Photoshop maple leaf brush, but the others are my own, drawn from leaves I picked up here and there.

I've also been doing some general cleaning up around the site. No real updates, but I'm trying to get it looking nicer.
kristensk: smirk (ane rin smirk)
Yes, I sometimes do art at times other than Christmas. This is just a silly little thing I've been trying to finish for a while. I sat on it because I really didn't want to tackle the perspective on the railing. But, I finally forced myself to do it the other night.

So, here's a very, very wet Rin and Kuro.
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
Well, Christmas was a little quiet this year, but awesome. Family came over, entirely too much was eaten (orange danish for breakfast... mmm... it's been too long), and presents were unwrapped. And then, I ended the day by watching "Kung Fu Panda 2", "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Megamind" on FX's Dreamworks-A-Thon or whatever it was.

Present-wise... Well, I now have plenty of things to watch or re-watch - "Pacific Rim", "Summer Wars", "Trigun: Badlands Rumble", the first season of "Avatar: The Last Airbender", and a lovely little Chuck Jones collection. Also, there were soundtracks (at last the "How to Train Your Dragon" soundtrack!), fuzzy warm socks, and [personal profile] jordannamorgan hooked me up with some lovely little Ao no/Blue Exorcist and Inuyasha goodies. (Again, thank you! I'm still squeeing.)

Also, though I'm late in posting here, I did complete my yearly SK Christmas pic. Onward to [community profile] fandom_stocking submissions!
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
Yes, I'm late with this post and my yearly SWAT Kat Christmas image. I am working on it! ...It just doesn't like me much right now. But, I did manage to clean up a Christmas-y Blue Exorcist image I drew last year.

Otherwise, Christmas was great. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits, and it was even cool enough to have a fire in the fireplace. (It should always be cool enough for this; there should be a rule.) Thanks to [ profile] jordannamorgan, I won't be suffering chocolate mint deprivation anytime soon, and I got this adorable little Rin from [ profile] mintysage as well as an equally adorable keychain figure. I also now have two new pairs of my favorite 7-pocket hiker's jeans, this amazing fleece shirt with pockets inside its pockets (yes, I love pockets), the Blue Exorcist Color Archive and a great lot of books. I'm much looking forward to the long-awaited continuation for the Star Wars X-Wing series, Aaron Allston's "Mercy Kill". And, because I got it first, I've already dived into the first book in the Temeraire series, "His Majesty's Dragon". An alternate history re-imagining of the Napoleonic Wars with dragons?! How could I resist?
kristensk: Inuyasha's tweakable ears (tweak)
Wow, it's clearly been too long since I've posted anywhere.  In my absence, both LJ and deviantART have redesigned things.

At any rate, new art!  I took on an art trade with TTSnim... uhm... months ago.  But, I think it's finally finished now.  Maybe.  I'll probably see some obvious mistake in my lighting or perspective tomorrow, and I still feel a little like I could have further exaggerated the Scooby-Doo-ish "hug each other and scream in terror" bit, but... I think it came out okay.
kristensk: smirk (ane rin smirk)
I really have gotten some art done lately. I've just quasi-finished several and then continued to poke at them for months. But, I think these three AnE (Blue Exorcist) pieces are finally as done as they're going to get.

Lost Identity - Inspired by a storyline [ profile] mintysage and I had going, Yukio finds himself pulled into Gehenna where his demon form and powers are forcibly awakened. With his memories sealed and re-named "Reikou" by his demon biological father, naturally it's up to Rin and the other students to stage a rescue mission.

Kiss the Cook - Rin indulging in the one field everyone agrees he excels at. This was just a really simple sketch I wanted to color... Then, I decided I needed to practice backgrounds... and perspective.

Fire-Breathing - Rin brings a Chinese dragon mask to life while Yukio is, as ever, unamused.

Otherwise, I'm working on a "little" FMA pic featuring Hughes and Elicia that wants to have an absurdly elaborate carnival backdrop as well as a few things I owe people.
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)

Christmas was great, but it's been a busy evening online.

I finished up my traditional SWAT Kat Christmas image and then posted the short fics I wrote for the [ profile] fmagiftexchange. I actually have one more entry to post, an art entry, but that'll have to be tomorrow.  I'm too tired for tricky things like touching up fingers (especially automail ones) tonight ;)

Also, because I think it came out nicely, I'm posting the AnE Christmas wallpaper I made for myself. Because little Rin and Yukio are adorable.

Otherwise, I can see I'm going to be in music heaven for a while.  I now have a stack of soundtrack CD's to work my way through, mostly by John Williams but also including "The Neverending Story" as well as the X-Men movie soundtracks courtesy [ profile] jordannamorgan. (Again, thank you!) I have a nice stack of books and manga to keep me busy otherwise. And, thanks to [ profile] seekersks and [ profile] mintysage I'm going to need more wallspace for all the FMA poster/wall scroll awesomeness they sent my way.

And, there should be an update to the SWAT Kat Fanfiction Archive coming soon as well as some drabble and icon projects I have in the works.
kristensk: bingo! (sk bingo)
So, I still haven't been getting far in my fanfic. But, it seems that it's a good time for art. In the last week, I've managed to finish up two old, old pieces that were sitting on my hard drive and made some new sketches.

First, a colored version of Ed's "little problem". I'd run across a tutorial recently for making fanart look like a screenshot, so I used this image as a guinea pig.

Then, I finally finished coloring an old sketch of Dark Razor in Painter. Originally drawn in conjunction with mine and [ profile] mintysage's They That Walk in Darkness fanfics.

Lastly, the AnE (Blue Exorcist) bug hit again, and I had to draw both Rin and this bit of foolishness. The last is [ profile] mintysage's fault. She noticed Rin's shirt in episode 6 and commented how it looked like something Ed would wear.
kristensk: smile (fma brothers happy)
It really is an art post! Not my best, but I did it for a contest being held by The-DA-Ranger-Group.

So, new arts. Based on the final episodes of the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime but with an AU twist. In the series, Alternate/London!Ed dies when a blimp crashes on him. But, I thought, what if he somehow acquired the ability to do alchemy while canon!Ed was possessing his body? Oh, the fun possibilities. Starting with alt!Ed shielding himself from the crash ;)

And, yes, I have webpages and a fanfic to update. Back to those I go.
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
Merry Belated Christmas and an advance Happy New Year!

Aiy! I really did mean to make a Christmas post, but things were a bit hectic here. It wasn't a bad Christmas, but it was a little subdued with our recent string of problems (particularly car trouble like whoa) and then the loss of our nearly twenty year old cat, Jenny. She was born in our garage in 1991 and outlived her brother, Brave, by eleven years (almost to the day). We're going to miss our little one.

Aside from that, there were far too many desserts, my little second cousin turned two, I got a lot of FMA stuff to squee over and [ profile] seekersks got me the awesome new desk chair I'm currently enjoying. To fully explain the awesomeness of the chair I'll note that it's got nice thick pads for the seat and back while its predecessor was a wooden kitchen chair. And, it makes a great reading chair too.

Additionally, I managed to finish my annual SWAT Kat Christmas pic and actually updated Kristen's SWAT Kat Gallery. Mostly with things that were already posted here over the last year, but they've all been permanently archived on the site now (sketches, drabbles, icons, fanfic recommendations, etc.). Although, looking at the additions to my non-SK fanfiction over the last year or so, I'm starting to think I may need to re-consider about making a small FMA site...
kristensk: smile (fma brothers happy)
Fiiiiiinally! My illustration for [ profile] jordannamorgan's "Family" is done at last! Well, I'll probably poke at it again in the near future when I start noticing bloopers. But, for now, here it is! Just in time since it's a Christmas story. Now, to get to work on my SWAT Kat Christmas image....

Also, Jordanna is made of awesome and win and wrote an absolutely wonderful Christmas gift fic for me. Go see!
kristensk: little kids in the snow (ane little twins)
So, here as it's almost a new year, I'll make my last post for 2009. The holidays have been good here. Christmas was great. Over far too fast, but great. I got to see all of the family, including my cousin, his wife and my little... second cousin? When you start getting into the children of cousins, I start getting confused. Anyways, good times.

And, I finished my Christmas image before Christmas! It's posted over at Kristen's SWAT Kat Gallery. Though expect to see a corrected version soon as I inevitably end up tweaking anything I rush to complete. (It's already been noted to me that Chance is missing his whiskers. And, that's fixed now.) There should also be a proper update coming along soonish as well.

And, of course I got gifts, including:

- A Sony Walkman mp3 player, which is awesome since the old mp3 player Seeker loaned me died a few months ago and the ancient CD player I've been using was a battery hog.
- The complete Heat Guy J series (fun show).
- "Spirited Away" and "Independence Day" on DVD. (I never had the former and only had a VHS of the latter.)
- The second season of the old TMNT series. (Still my favorite version of the Turtles.)
- The complete set of The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Finally! At last, I get to see that last episode that I always managed to miss when the show ran on Nickelodeon. Of course, it's been so many years, I'll have to re-watch the entire series first.
- And, an Amazon giftcard I will be putting to good use ;)

2009 has been an okay year, but here's hoping I get a few more things done in the coming year. Especially art-wise. I've really been letting my art slide.
kristensk: smile (bingo)
Project Updates: Well, I fiiiiinally finished that pic of Callie I'd been working on forever. See? At least, I think it's finished. Any suggestions would be welcomed. It's not the most exciting pic, but I used it to test out my tablet laptop, which is amazing, by the way! And, I've got another tablet pic in the works too.

Website Updates: Everything needs updating. Kristen's SWAT Kat Gallery should see an update within the next few days. The SWAT Kats Fanfiction Archive is due for an update, but I only have one submission at this time. Likewise for the SWAT Kats Fan Art Page. But, that one's waited so long, I'll probably go ahead and post it soon regardless.

Randomness: In other news, as usual, [ profile] seekersks and I will be going to Otakon again this year! And, that's... next week! Wow, it snuck up on me! They haven't listed any guests that I'm really excited over this time out, but I still expect that it will be fun. It always is ;)
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
Ramblings: Christmas was great this year despite our family gathering being a bit smaller. But, my cousin and his wife were understandably tied up. As of today, I have a new little first cousin once removed!

And, I got some nice gifts:

- Some awesome new jeans loaded with pockets courtesy [ profile] seekersks, who was apparently tired of me coveting his cargo pants.
- The soundtrack to Steamboy as well as new CD's by Enya and Loreena McKennitt, who I haven't heard anything from in a while.
- The set of all four Indiana Jones movies.
- The fifth and sixth season boxsets of Inuyasha. (Now, I just need that elusive third season box, and I'll have them all to date. Mwahahahaaa!)
- The first Naruto movie, Pixar's awesome Ratatouille and the TMNT movie.
- The Inuyasha Manga Profiles book.
- Several other books, most notably Piper at the Gate by Mary Stanton. It's the sequel to "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West", which I read in middle school in a span of about twenty-four hours and still remember clearly. Superb book. I hope the sequel will be as good.

Website Updates: Also, Kristen's SWAT Kat Gallery has been updated! No new Christmas image this year as I was tied up with some other projects, but I did get one finished pic up! It's a terribly out of season one, but ah well. Additionally, I updated the Non-SK Fanfiction page with the drabbles I've been posting here, updated the links and made some minor tweaks to the Curious About Me? page.
kristensk: bingo! (sk bingo)
Art and Such: Man, I just haven't gotten much done lately, be it art or fics. But, there is an update for the SWAT Kat Fanfiction Archive in the works.

And, thanks to getting the first season of Darkwing Duck as well as that of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the 80's cartoon) for my birthday I've been reminded of some of my old favorite shows. It also reminded me of some of my old art. I got to digging around and found a few pieces of my old Darkwing Duck fanart that were scan-worthy. These are all from around 1994. Be afraid.

Squeeeeze! - Seems like the Liquidator has the upper hand on Darkwing. At least for now. (Prismacolor pencils)

Caught in the Act - You know Gosalyn couldn't resist examining every single Christmas present with her name on it. (Prismacolor pencils. Unfortunately, there's a gray film from the old wax that I couldn't get off. More rubbing with a cloth might do it, but I didn't want to damage anything.)

Prepare to be Soaked - Darkwing and Launchpad have Megavolt cornered. (Prismacolor pencils)

And, just for a preview, I do have some new stuff in the works. See? New stuff!
