kristensk: reading (fma bookworm)
I read two of these months to over a year ago. But, the last one is new and reminded me that I should post some recommendations again.

And, another [community profile] fandom_stocking is over. I wanted to do a bit more this year, but it just wouldn't come together. Still, I completed a oneshot, another installment in my dragon!Royverse, and two drabbles, all of which I'll be posting over the next few days.

My own stocking was a little bag of happiness. I got a lot of well wishes, gorgeous photo links, Inuyasha fanart, and two lovely fanfic gifts.

First, Wardrobe Adjustment by [personal profile] jordannamorgan, a wonderful Ao no/Blue Exorcist fic featuring all my favorite things - demon!Yukio, anime follow-up, sibling shenanigans, and awesome friendship feels between the twins and Shiemi.

Then, there were even more family/friendship feels plus wintry goodness in First Snow by [personal profile] evil_little_dog, a sweet FMA fic with Ed, Al, and Winry enjoying Al's first snowfall after regaining his body.

Thanks so much to everyone!
kristensk: thumbs up (fma ed thumbs up)
As usual, I'm constantly reading fanfiction. So, here are some reviews on a few of my favorite recent(ish) completed stories.

kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
And, [community profile] fandom_stocking is now over for the year. I didn't get as many gift!fics written as I'd have liked, but I got some amazing things in my stocking. Things like a wonderful post-anime Ao no/Blue Exorcist fanfic from [personal profile] jordannamorgan that touches on all my favorite topics - what happened post-anime, demon!Yukio, brotherly bonding, all the good stuff. Then, there was more Okumura twins bonding from [personal profile] bridgetmkennitt, a cute little Fullmetal Alchemist ficlet from [personal profile] vexed_wench, a sweet Inuyasha ficlet with Sesshoumaru and Rin from [personal profile] kiramaru7, well wishes, lots of gorgeous horse and tortie cat images, and a bonus book recommendation from [personal profile] evil_little_dog.

Oh, and there was some extra holiday fun when my brother brought over a belated Christmas present to share: a selection of Japanese KitKat flavors. The citrus and dark/cocoa ones were my favorites.
kristensk: smile (kris ears)
And, squeaking in with a completely random Halloween SWAT Kat image. I doodled these two up a few weeks ago and decided to color them on a whim.

Also, I have a fanfic recommendation. I'm not really a big Halloween fan, but I do like a little bit of creepy. (I blame childhood exposure to "The Real Ghostbusters" and my grandfather's collection of sea-based ghost stories.) And, this fic hit the spot beautifully.

The Kraken by SectoBoss
Series: Stand Still Stay Silent
Rating: K+/PG
Warnings: Some violence, creepiness.
Location: Archive of Our Own
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: On the journey from Iceland to Denmark, Reynir's crewmates tell him the tale of one beast every sailor prays to never have to face.
Comments: I got into the Stand Still Stay Silent webcomic a while back. It's the ultimate exception that breaks my personal no zombies rule. Because the storyline is definitely a variant of the zombie apocalypse. Set 90 years after the mysterious Rash Illness decimated all mammalian life on land and sea, the nations of Scandinavia are, so far as they know, the only survivors. Everything else - including large swathes of their own former countries - is now the so-called Silent World, crumbling ruins filled with monsters. Because, with the Rash, death is the kinder fate.

"If you come across a Beast, a Troll, or a Giant, do not run or call for help, but stand still and stay silent. It might go away."

And, into this world, this fanfic brings the suggestion of an even more terrifying danger. One the story builds slowly through an old seaman's tale, sightings and clues gradually gathering into a nightmarish conclusion.
kristensk: thumbs up (fma ed thumbs up)
It's been a while since I did fic recs, and, with [personal profile] jordannamorgan posting a fantastic gift!fic for me, it seemed like the right time to toss a few up. (Note: there's a spoiler for the anime ending of Ao no/Blue Exorcist in here, so be warned.)

kristensk: Blue Exorcist - Shiro (ane shiro)
First, a fanfic recommendation for catastrophechao's excellent Yukio introspection, Lists. In which Yukio tries to define himself, and the author succeeds. It's well-written and poignant.

And then, some gabble about the latest Ao no/Blue Exorcist chapters.

Rampant Spoilers Behind the Cut! )
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
Yes, I'm still posting gift!fic because I'm slow. And, I've realized that I hadn't even mentioned the lovely gift fics I received! So, let's see: in the [ profile] fmagiftexchange I got a lovely stocking full of fic, icons (including some hilarious animated ones), and even an art piece! Fic included a very sweet Roy/Riza holiday piece and a hilarious piece where Hughes meets Mustang's sisters.

Then, there was [community profile] fandom_stocking with some real surprises in this year's stocking. Besides some gorgeous picspams and well wishes, I got a sweet Blue Exorcist fic! And, an offer for some SWAT Kat fic! (I really can't believe that one, but I'm squeeing.) To top it all off, [personal profile] jordannamorgan passed along another of her beautiful, thoughtful FMA pieces with a take on equivalent exchange (and Al) that I quite love.

(Also, I confess that I'm holding off on posting the two longest gift!fics I wrote while I clean them up a bit.)
kristensk: reading (fma bookworm)
It's been an age since I've posted any fanfic recommendations. So, here are a few including recent reads as well as older ones. They're all still good.

And, my first [community profile] fandom_stocking is over. I wish I had been able to contribute more than three short fics (two of them drabbles), but I had to fight writer's block every step of the way. Despite that, it was fun.

My own stocking was pleasantly full at the end with well wishes, two cute FMA drabbles from [personal profile] yhlee and [personal profile] evil_little_dog, and [personal profile] jordannamorgan's lovely Winter Wonderland. Oh, and there were cute tortie cat images too! Because torties are the best cats. *accepts headbutt bribe from the resident tortie, Mo*

So, yes, now I'll be posting my Fandom Stocking efforts and then moving on to both the SWAT Kat Fanfiction Archive and SWAT Kat Fan Art Page, which are in need of updates.
kristensk: reading (fma bookworm)
Yes, there are things to fangirl! First, the finale of the "crazy!Edverse" was as good as I'd hoped it would be. There's a review below, plus one for another fic I left out last time.

Second, I had a blast on Saturday when [ profile] seekersks and I went to Charlotte to catch the limited re-release of "Back to the Future" for its twenty-fifth anniversary. I was only seven when the first movie came out, so neither of us had ever seen it in the theater. It was a lot of fun. There was a pretty big crowd, and everyone was really into it. I love when the whole audience claps and cheers for the high points of a movie. Not to the point of being disruptive, but it's great to be in a theater when people respond to something besides toilet humor. The last movie I saw that got the cheering was "Seabiscuit".

Anyways, we all got a twenty-fifth anniversary poster for attending the showing, and Seeker and I got to spend some time exploring the big Concord Mills mall. They have a Macado's! Wow, I've missed my Macado's ever since the local-ish one closed. Naturally, lunch there was a must.

And, the fic reviews... ...behind the cut! )
kristensk: thumbs up (fma ed thumbs up)
It's been a while since I posted any fanfic recommendations. But, I've read several really good ones recently and... not-so-recently that deserve a post. Fanfic recs under the cut! )

And, now I look forward to reading the final installment of [ profile] metisket's crazy!Ed storyline, which will hopefully appear in a future recommendation. It's as tragic as it is hilarious, and I know it can't end all roses, but I do hope Ed will be able to find some peace... and, you know, survive. That would be nice.
kristensk: smile (fma brothers happy)
Fun news all around! First, I got a package from [ profile] jordannamorgan yesterday with two of the volumes of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga that I'm missing. I still have a lot of catching up to do, but I had a gap between volumes 7 and 13 that these will help fill nicely ;) Then, I stumbled across Jordanna's excellent short fic Spark, which has a fun historical cameo plus a wonderful portrayal of Ed and Al. To compound her awesomeness, Jordanna also finished the fic of my second suggestion for her alphabet meme, combining Ed, Havoc and a lot of mud. (If that's not a winning combination, what is?) It's called Down and Dirty, and there's plenty of mud to go around.

Topping it all off, I read the news that Arakawa will be publishing a new Fullmetal Alchemist side story! I'm hoping it will feature Roy and Co. and more about them after the Promised Day. Although, really, I've come to love the entire cast, so I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever it is. But, with Ed and Al's story nicely tied up... maybe Roy please?
kristensk: Fullmetal Alchemist - Roy and Riza (fma roy and riza)
So, now Fullmetal Alchemist is truly, completely over as the final episode of FMA:B has aired. *sniffle* But, it was a really great episode. It put nice animation to all of my favorite moments from the manga plus adding some little bits that were much appreciated. There was just one thing...

Fortunately, a couple of fanfic authors have assured me that Riza can and will end this hairy monster:
First, [ profile] randomcheeses' Mustangche (since removed, sadly) and then deranged black kitten of doom's aptly named Thing of Evil.

Yeah, I'm sure this means I've lost what little of it I had left - wibbling over a fictional character's facial hair.

And, it seems there will be another Fullmetal Alchemist movie! However, my hopes for that will be dashed if the latest rumors are true and it's live action. Even if they gave it a good budget, an out of this world casting job and splendid well-chosen effects (the chances of which are all iffy on their own), it would probably still mean doing some sort of retelling of the storyline to introduce it to a new audience. And, what I really, really wanted to see was a stand-alone adventure set earlier in the storyline. Something like the novels, set during the three years Ed and Al travelled around before the main story began. Also... I'm an animation fan. Live action doesn't have nice drawings for me to drool over.

Website Updates: Finally, the SWAT Kat Fan Art Page has been updated! Submissions are still being scarce, but it's something!

I'm also finally poking at my main SK page. At least the Christmas decorations are down! And, I went through and updated the links again.

And, before I go....

Fanfic Recommendations:

Just popping up to plug some of my recent favorites, all by friends/acquaintances/accomplices.

kristensk: thumbs up (fma group)
This is hilarious and vaguely scary.

So, first, I drew a sketch of a cat chimera Ed, who is having a "little problem".

Then, I posted it to deviantART, and [ profile] randomcheeses speculated that Ed looked like he was talking to Colonel Mustang. All kinds of fun ensued as we started trading back and forth snippets of dialogue.

This led to the awesomeness that is [ profile] randomcheeses writing a fanfic based on our little back and forth, which is brilliant and hilarious and you should go read it now. I can only take credit for some of the dialogue (and not all of that); the rest is all her.

And then, that led to fanfic author SakuraLetters being inspired to write her Fullmetal Alchemist/Harry Potter crossover fanfic Of Astronomy Towers and Chimeras, which is completely random but just as completely genuinely funny.
kristensk: snow-covered trees (let it snow)
It SNOWED!!!! A whole three inches! Which, yes, I know is nothing some places, but it's more than we've seen lately, especially in December. It's been pretty, and maybe a little will still be around on Christmas.

And, yes, I'm working on a Christmas image for this year. Hopefully, it will be done... well, before Christmas has passed ;)

Random Fanfic Recommendation:

Because chapter 102 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga inspired a lot of fanfiction, most of it quite dreary, some of it that I hope will actually happen and then... there's this, which was the most different of the bunch... and simply brilliant for taking a lighter look at things.

Building an Army by Riiko Shea
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga)
Rating: K+/PG with a nice, big warning for spoilers like whoa!
Summary: When Roy opens his eyes in Father's lair, his thoughts are panicked... until he remembers that he has a goal. (Oneshot. SPOILERS for Chapter 102 of the manga.)

Website Updates: I'm currently working on an update for the SWAT Kats Fanfiction Archive. And, yes, I still have lots more work to do on the new Archive site as well.

And, since I've been in a Fullmetal Alchemist mood lately, which of course means I've been reading fanfic for it, here are some fanfic recs. I decided to stick to completed pieces this time out, but there are some works in-progress that will definitely make my list if they ever see completion.

...she really did write that crack!fic! And, what's more, it makes sense! And, it, like Sage, is made of awesome.

Behold! The "Fully Caffeinated Alchemist"! Go forth and read it!

And, yes, it loosely ties to my "Ground Rules" drabble. Sort of. And, given its length compared to my drabble... I think I owe Sage more fic now.

kristensk: Inuyasha's tweakable ears (tweak)
No long epics this time. Just some oneshots that I really enjoyed and thought I would recommend.

Six Feet and Slipping by Goldberry
Series: Bleach
Rating: K/G
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Ichigo's dying and everything is wonderful.
Comments: I think the summary covers it all. I mean, if you're familiar at all with Bleach... just think about it! Further proof that I really don't mind character death as much as I claim to. I just mind favorite characters going away and leaving me to read chapter after chapter without them ;)

Sacrifice by Aryndiel
Series: Inuyasha
Rating: T/PG-13
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: The kazaana finally gets the better of Miroku, however, things don’t go exactly as expected. There is a sacrifice to be made.
Comments: Pay no attention to the bleakness of the summary ;) This is a serious story and there is a serious sacrifice, but, all the same, this one gave me a warm fuzzy. Because you know the Inuyasha gang would never lose a friend without a fight.

Warmth by Aryndiel
Series: Inuyasha
Rating: K/G
Status: Complete/Oneshot
Summary: Investigating a cold draft at night, Mrs. Higurashi muses on Inuyasha’s nature, and his presence in her daughter’s life.
Comments: A sweet little story that reminded me why I love Mama Higurashi as a character.

Aryndiel has also written several other wonderful oneshots that are all well worth reading.
